frequently asked questions

An exercise physiologist specializes in managing health conditions, rehabilitation, and chronic disease prevention through exercise. They work closely with patients to design tailored programs for recovery and overall health improvement. An exercise scientist focuses more on the scientific principles of exercise, performance enhancement, and fitness. They work with healthy individuals, athletes, and in research, studying the effects of exercise on the body and contributing to sports performance or health promotion strategies.

Physiotherapists focus on treating physical injuries, pain, and dysfunction using hands-on techniques like manual therapy and exercises. They address acute injuries, musculoskeletal issues, and post-surgery rehabilitation. Exercise physiologists, however, specialize in using exercise to manage chronic conditions, improve fitness, and prevent injuries. They design personalized exercise programs for rehabilitation and health optimization. While physiotherapists focus on recovery and restoring movement, exercise physiologists focus on long-term health, fitness, and rehabilitation through exercise-based approaches. What is the difference between ES and PT?
An exercise scientist holds a degree in exercise science and focuses on the scientific principles of exercise, health, and performance. They often work in research, sports performance, or health promotion, creating evidence-based programs for various populations. A personal trainer, by contrast, is a fitness professional who designs and implements personalized workout plans for clients, focusing on fitness goals like strength, weight loss, and general health. Personal trainers typically have certifications and emphasize practical, individualized training rather than scientific research.

All of our physiotherapists at Sports and Rehab are fully qualified to perform dry needling. Dry needling is a specialized technique designed to target myofascial trigger points – tight, sensitive areas within muscles that can cause pain and restrict movement. During the dry needling process, fine, sterile needles (about the size of a hair) are inserted directly into these trigger points to promote muscle relaxation, improve blood flow, and alleviate pain. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is focused on relieving muscle tightness and enhancing mobility. It is highly effective for treating conditions such as muscle tension, joint dysfunction, and chronic pain, and is often used alongside other physiotherapy treatments to optimize recovery and improve overall function.
